1868 Liberty Seated Dime, Repunched Date, F-103, PCGS XF-45

1868 Liberty Seated Dime, Repunched Date, F-103, PCGS XF-45

$0.00

A tougher post-Civil War Philadelphia Mint date, with a low overall PCGS Population; 8 in the grade with 11 in AU grades.  R-4 in this grade according to Greer, and as a date this commonly sells at a significant premium vs. posted “retail” values above VF when available.  Probably still undervalued compared to San Francisco coinage of the period, considering that an estimated 300 examples exist in all grades, compared as an example to the 1865-S Dime that has an estimate of 250 total survivors (8 PCGS XF-45) , but is valued closer to $1,800 in this grade.  This is also an example of a Repunched Date, Greer 101, Fortin-103, which is very scarce (R-5 estimate by Fortin). In the “Top 100” Fortin varieties PCGS Registry Set (coin #51).  This matches the finer of only two coins certified at PCGS with attribution, as well as the Fortin reference and plate coin (I do not know if this is the one PCGS coin). I must apologize here as I apparently forgot to ask for a variety attribution when I submitted this, however guaranteed to be verified as the stated variety, and you don’t even have to get it regraded.  If having the variety on the label is a concern, you can submit it for a reholder and ask to have it added by paying just for the attribution. Figuring an equitable value for the grade/scarcity/variety tri-fecta is tough, as there are basically no trades to go by. Gerry Fortin’s website shows a value for the “Top 100” Seated Dimes, suggesting $275 in EF-40, and $550 in AU-50.  I have forgotten exactly what I sold this for, however I believe it was in the $300-$350 range.

As a side bar: Apparently, a full roll of this date in circulated condition surfaced in Europe at some point in the past, probably forming the majority of available specimens, however this is likely not one of those coins having come out of a very old Idaho collection.
