1872-S Seated Liberty Half Dime, Mintmark Below, Misplaced Date, FS-302, Extremely Fine

1872-S Seated Liberty Half Dime, Mintmark Below, Misplaced Date, FS-302, Extremely Fine

$149.00

For some reason, the Mint produced Reverse dies for Half Dimes with the Mintmark placed both within and below the bow on the wreath in 1872 - there is no official reason given as to why, however it was likely simply by chance. This is also an example of FS-302, which shows a Misplaced Date punch buried within Liberty’s gown. The telltale sign is a small (by definition on a coin this size) “blip”, which is suspected to be the very bottom of a “7”, just to the left of the pendant at the bottom of Liberty’s gown. Considered scarce by Fivaz & Stanton (URS-8, 65 to 125 known). This is a variety PCGS will certify; at present they show no specimens below AU-50. In this case, I did not think it worthwhile to submit it for grading, as the premium is not too big. However, I will guarantee the attribution if anyone chooses to send it in (if you chose to do so please let me know so I can track the transaction.)
