1837 Coronet Head Large Cent, Plain Cord, Small Letters, PCGS VF-30

1837 Coronet Head Large Cent, Plain Cord, Small Letters, PCGS VF-30

$139.00

Head of 1837, with Plain Hair Cords & Small Letters Reverse. Newcomb-5, the diagnostic heavy Obverse die crack is readily evident. Certainly a conservative grade assigned by PCGS. I had thought VF-35 at least. In fact, this seems to be equivalent to what PCGS will commonly certify as EF-40. I compared it to a Heritage coin that sold in 2012 (which was CAC’d), as well as a coin being offered at the time of listing by a major, well known dealer, and could not see any functional difference! It certainly has nicer surfaces that the other coin being offered, and still a sense of the original “hard” Copper surface and some luster. Better yet about as problem free as 180 year old Copper that actually saw some use gets, other than the mark on Liberty’s cheek. However, as the old saying goes, you can’t fight City Hall. I left the old pre-PCGS images posted as they may show surface & detail a bit better.
