1937-D 3 Legged Buffalo Nickel, PCGS/CAC AU-58

1937-D 3 Legged Buffalo Nickel, PCGS/CAC AU-58

$1,899.00

A fully original and attractive AU/Unc example of this popular error/variety. Oddly enough for a “rare” coin, this is actually fairly easily available in middling circulated grades, and available although pricey in Unc. That is simply because of the large mintage for the 1937-D date overall assured that a lot of BU coins survived, so by definition quite a few 3 Legs were included, while average circulated grade coins were put aside during the collecting boom of the 1940’s & 1950’s . What you do not see as often are well struck, ORIGINAL AU-58’s. Although quite a few coins were put aside shortly after discovery, the vast majority seem to have been “improved” in an attempt to create a “Unc”. Sort of like the old “making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear” scenario. And fewer yet will CAC. For reference, almost 2,400 coins at PCGS & NGC, versus 206 at CAC. So while not rare in absolute terms, certainly scarce as the CAC premium would normally encourage submission - and 10% pass rate is not a whole lot.
