1872 Shield Nickel, Doubled Die Obverse, F-06?, PCGS MS-63,

$499.00

An original coin, with a slightly natural “hazy” toning, typical of undisturbed Shield Nickel surfaces.  An eye-obvious Doubled Die Obverse, one of a number produced this year for some reason - perhaps something in the water at Philadelphia?  This appears to match the description of Fletcher-06, however that variety is listed as being struck only from Proof dies. Matching features including direction and offset of the cross border, annulet and leaf edges, the doubling on horizontal shield lines and vertical lines sharply extending to up into the bottom of the horizontal shield lines. As well, in comparison with images of Proofs, the date positioning appears consistent, and there are small areas of "unfinished" field surface inside the bottom of the Shield which also appear to match.  This coin is clearly NOT a Proof striking, however it is known that Proof dies were re-used for Business strikes at times, whether after being rejected for use for collector coinage or after retirement from service for Proofs. Not identified on the PCGS holder as they only list a few, favored Cherrypickers varieties. I will note however that this is one of Howard Spindel's "Top 20" varieties (as a Proof).  While my attribution may be seen as being speculative, this would make interesting study for someone interested in the series.
