An original AU-58, with no real wear, just some loss of luster on the cheek and in the fields from very brief use.  A very nice example of this popular date, which is typically overgraded by most dealers. For some reason, this date was released around New Orleans in 1879, and many returned to banks and the Treasury shortly after, leading to a lot of “sliders”. This has always depressed the apparent value of REAL Uncirculated MS-60 to 62 coins, as many collectors could not tell the difference between and AU-58 and an Unc - and dealers in the 1970’s & 1980’s were certainly not going to tell them …
