1901-O Barber Quarter, Very Fine+, PCGS VF-25, Scarce

1901-O Barber Quarter, Very Fine+, PCGS VF-25, Scarce

$527.00

A solid Very Fine+, the Reverse is a bit stronger than the Obverse, not unusual with New Orleans Mint coinage. Like seemingly 90%+ of all survivors, cleaned at one point long ago, not too harshly and the color is more than acceptable. The odd look with “whiteness” around the Obverse stars is where I removed some accumulated crud, using a coin-safe method. The lighter color was caused by those areas being covered up and not toning with the rest of the coin. Obviously PCGS had no problem with this. I will note that I think this is a touch undergraded - an 1896-O Quarter that came back in the same submission as a VF-30 actually has a bit less detail than this coin. Now a blunt commentary, and I apologize if I offend anyone. I submitted this coin to CAC, and they refused to sticker it - in my opinion beyond stupid considering that: a) a couple of the other coins in the submission that they did accept, and b) the unmitigated CRAP in other PCGS/NGC holders I have seen that other dealers want MORE for than this coin. A leading specialist in the series is offering a similarly graded PCGS coin that has been OBVIOUSLY and poorly cleaned, with basically no eye appeal in my opinion, for $550 (no CAC). I believe that this coin should have been CAC’d, and it is priced accordingly - if you know the series, you can make up your own mind about the matter. Images of the coin taken prior to certification are also included, as I think they may give a better view of the surfaces and color.
