1894-S Barber Half Dollar, Semi Prooflike Uncirculated Coin, PCGS MS-62

1894-S Barber Half Dollar, Semi Prooflike Uncirculated Coin, PCGS MS-62

$1,029.00

While one of the most common pre-1898 dates in circulated condition below VF, definitely not as an Unc. A very interesting coin, with noticeably Semi Prooflike surfaces, and some light Cameo contrast, due to the dies being repolished. It does have the appearance of having been dipped to remove darker toning at some point, but that did not “kill” the surfaces and obviously did not bother PCGS (almost ALL Barber Halves below a certified MS-64 have been dipped at some point). This also displays a series of parallel lines running Southwest to Northeast, which I am certain are from the planchet production process and not “scratches” or the common rash from being bumped by an album slide (the killer of many beautiful original coins). I have noted lighter signs of similar lines on other higher graded certified 1894-S specimens I reviewed images of, so obviously San Francisco had some production issues this year. This may be related to the short but sharp Depression that ran from 1893 to 1895 - the San Francisco Mint tended to run with equipment cast off from Philadelphia, so money for repairs of planchet rollers would have been scarce. Possibly worthy of some study by a series enthusiast. I have also discussed this with other dealers who have been around for a while, and none remember seeing a Semi P/L Barber Half, so we may have something a bit more unusual here - which accounts for my slightly higher asking price. So to, this coin is not as dark or scuffed up as many MS-61/62 Barber halves tend to be, also suggesting a slightly higher price is not out of line.
