1864 Liberty Seated Half Dollar, Scarce Low Mintage Date, PCGS VF-35

1864 Liberty Seated Half Dollar, Scarce Low Mintage Date, PCGS VF-35

$449.00

A seemingly fully original specimen of this low mintage Civil War date, very close to EF. Perhaps just a touch flat on the Reverse, although it retains some luster in the lettering and around the stars, and I am sure that many dealers would call this “EF” if it was raw. One old Obverse scratch may also account for the grade, however in my opinion it does not significantly detract. With as few certified examples as this date are available, you may not want to try to wait for a “perfect” coin. PCGS Population of only 11 coins in VF-35, with 84 from EF-40 to AU-58, despite thirty years of grading and the financial incentive to submit this date due to scarcity. Interestingly enough, no auctions since 2011, which indicates that most coins are sold direct to customers off want lists. Only the second specimen of this date I have owned in the last five years (the other a PCGS XF-45 placed with a local customer). A couple of images of the coin pre-certification are also included.
